Decisions can be difficult. Most of us do a lot of second guessing when it comes time to throw something away. We’re haunted by thoughts of, “I still plan to use that,” or “oh, I can’t throw that out – it was a gift,” or even “but it was so expensive.” Don’t let the voices in your head tell you what to do! You can CHOOSE what you listen to!
Those nagging thoughts will drag you down and surround you with things you no longer want or need. Tell them to SHUT UP! Then throw out the useless item. If you can’t bring yourself to put it by the curb on trash day, then bag it up and drop it at Goodwill!

If it’s too big for the trash collectors, there are charities that will come to you and haul away that old couch that you never loved or that bed from the room you converted into a craft room. In short, it doesn’t need to take up valuable space in your garage.

Want to get rid of that extra weight or role of flab? The weight loss/fitness industry spends BILLIONS this time of year appealing to that voice in your head. If those are the voices you choose, then join a gym or start a diet — but do it because you genuinely WANT to, not because some stupid voice talked you into it.
But here’s the real wisdom about getting rid of things, it doesn’t just apply to things! Those people in your life who feel compelled to say nasty things about you? Shut them out! Those family members who don’t stand by you when you need them? Create a new family of friends who truly care!

As we approach the beginning of another new year, maybe it’s time to take stock of all the stuff in our life that’s holding us back or even holding us down. It’s a time of making decisions. Be brave about them. Don’t make it easy with a way out — you’re only cheating yourself. Slam (and even lock) the door! Burn that damn bridge!

After all … it’s your life, live it on your own terms, surrounded by the things and people that bring you joy!
