Pu’uhonua: Hot and Wet

Kona … Hawaii’s warm and drier island, right? Unless an atmospheric river hits the island, dumping a ton of rain in just a few days.

Of course, that’s what happened when WE were there a few years ago. But we didn’t let the rain put a damper on our visit; in fact, it turned into one of our most memorable “letter” trips yet.

Because we’ll remember “P is for Pu’uhonua” for a surreal hot and wet experience of our own making.

The rain was unrelenting. On our way to Pu’uhonua O Honaunau we detoured to avoid crossing a flooded roadway (Turn Around, Don’t Drown!). When we got there, the park was closed as the rain kept falling, but we didn’t let the weather dampen our spirits.

The park was closed, but the rain was delightful

We drove to the Hualālai volcano, enjoying the surreal rock formations created by the cooling lava and the waves crashing against the ever-changing cliffs. The rain soaked us to the skin but the temperatures were warm, so we didn’t care.

The untold story… In the midst of all this storminess, we woke around 2 am to howling winds whipping up wavelets in the lagoon just outside our room. The wind blew mist and rain onto our lanai as we stepped naked into the maelstrom. It was surreal. The warm, wet and windy weather was an apt metaphor for how we were feeling. Lust overtook us and we had sex right there on the lanai, feeling the warmth of the wind-driven rain on the outside of our bodies as we warmed each other inside. It was hot, wet, and wonderful. Sated, we dried off and dropped into bed for a wonderfully deep sleep.

The view from our lanai … after the storm.

Memories are made from unique experiences where you step outside the norm. So it was with our hot and wet night in Hawaii.
